How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: What Actually Matters

Practical, guideline-safe ways to improve your Google Maps ranking: relevance, distance and prominence explained, plus the mistakes that hold local businesses back.

Ask any local business owner what they want from Google and the answer is the same: "I want to show up on the map." The three businesses that appear in the map section of Google Search — often called the local pack — get a large share of the calls, direction requests and visits for that search.

This guide explains how that ranking works, what you can influence, and what to stop wasting time on.

The three factors Google itself names

Google's help pages describe local ranking in three words: relevance, distance and prominence.

Relevance

Does your profile clearly match the search? If someone searches "orthodontist", Google needs to understand that you are one. Relevance comes from your categories, services, description, reviews that mention your work, and your website.

Distance

How close are you to the person searching, or to the place they typed? You can't move your shop, but you can make sure your address or service area is accurate so Google doesn't misplace you.

Prominence

How well known and trusted is your business? Google looks at the number and quality of reviews, mentions on other websites, links, and how established you are offline. Famous landmarks and well-known brands are prominent for a reason.

What you can actually do

1. Nail your primary category

If you only change one thing, check this. Many businesses pick a category that is too broad ("Shop") or describes a side service. The primary category should match how customers describe you. Read our category guide for a simple method.

2. Complete every section

An incomplete profile gives Google less to match against. Fill in services, products, hours, attributes, opening date and a proper description. It is unglamorous work, but it is the foundation.

3. Earn a steady flow of genuine reviews

A handful of reviews from five years ago tells customers — and Google — less than a steady stream of recent ones. Build asking into your process:

  • Send your review link on WhatsApp right after a good experience.
  • Put a QR code at your billing counter.
  • Train staff to ask at the moment the customer is happiest.

Reviews that naturally mention the service ("got my root canal done here") help relevance too. Never script them or offer rewards — that violates Google's policies.

4. Reply to reviews

Replying shows you care and gives future customers a reason to trust you. Keep replies personal and specific. Our review reply templates make it quick.

5. Add real photos regularly

Fresh photos of your work, team and premises signal an active business and help customers decide. A few new photos every month is a good habit.

6. Make your website support your profile

Your website should mention the same name, address and phone, describe each service on its own page, and load quickly on mobile. A slow, outdated site sends people back to the search results. Locvanta's free check includes a Google PageSpeed test for exactly this reason.

7. Get mentioned locally

Listings on relevant directories (Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo, Zomato, Sulekha, industry associations), local news coverage and partnerships with nearby businesses all build prominence. Consistency matters — see NAP consistency.

8. Keep the profile active

Post updates, add special hours for holidays, answer questions and keep information current. An actively managed profile is easier for customers to trust.

Things that do not help (or actively hurt)

  • Keyword-stuffing your business name. "Best AC Repair Service Andheri Mumbai" instead of your real name breaks the guidelines and risks suspension.
  • Fake reviews or review exchanges. Google detects patterns and removes them; the profile can be restricted.
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices to appear in more areas. This is one of the most common causes of suspension.
  • Creating multiple profiles for the same business.
  • Changing your category every week. Make a considered decision and give it time.

Why your ranking looks different to different people

Local results are personalised by location. Your shop might be first for someone standing outside and tenth for someone three kilometres away. That's why a single screenshot is not a reliable ranking report. Tracking positions for a fixed set of searches over time, from a consistent location, gives a much truer picture.

Locvanta checks your position for your chosen keywords using Google's own Places data and records the trend, so you can see whether changes are working — without guesses.

A realistic timeline

Fixing categories and completing the profile can show results within weeks. Reviews and prominence build over months. Anyone promising guaranteed #1 rankings in seven days is promising something no one controls.
